This meeting between Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi was the beginning. Opus One 2017 exudes subtle aromas of fragrant florals, fresh garden herbs and forest floor that give way to a concentrated blend of red cherry, blackberry and black currant. But they have one thing in common: they are both masters of Cabernet Sauvignon. After spending 17 months in new French oak and a year in bottle. The classic blackberry and cassis character of Cabernet Sauvignon melds seamlessly with the black cherry, red currant and violet from the Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit. The 2018 vintage contains all five Bordeaux varieties, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (84). Finishes with a long, layered aftertaste. Opus One is a cult California cab based blend, produced in super limited quantity, very hard to come by. A wine of subtlety and grace, Opus One doesn’t rush to reveal itself and neither does the winery. ![]() That year Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and the Robert Mondavi family gathered to celebrate their first harvest at Opus One. This 2018 is an extraordinary Bordeaux blend of 84 Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 Petit Verdot, 5 Merlot, 4 Cabernet Franc and 1 Malbec from Napa Valley. In July of 1989, groundbreaking for the new winery took place and the construction of the facility was completed in 1991. In 1984, Baron Philippe, his daughter Philippine and Robert Mondavi selected Scott Johnson of Johnson, Fain & Pereira as design architect for the Opus One winery. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Opus One offers up bold, expressive black and blue fruits: warm black plums, black cherries, blackcurrants and wild. ![]()
